Local Spotlight: The Animal Shelter Society

Needing a new, furry best friend to join your family? You should consider adopting a dog or cat from The Animal Shelter Society! Not only can you pick up a precious dog to play fetch with or an adorable cat to lay on your lap, but you’ll be changing an animal’s life by welcoming them into your cozy home, and in no time at all, they’ll be part of your family!
About the Shelter
The Animal Shelter Society is a private, non-profit 501c3 organization whose mission is to promote and ensure the well-being of homeless animals by providing them with shelter, food, and chances to be adopted by caring, loving humans! This is made possible through a partnership with staff, volunteers, and the warm community of Muskingum County.
Their efforts include an extensive adoption program to place animals into loving homes, the proficient spaying and neutering of all their animals, dedicated and professionally trained staff and volunteers, and the curation of vital educational programs to prevent cruelty and mistreatment of animals.
Services Offered
In addition to their adoption program, the shelter also offers a few vital services such as:
- Wellness Clinic: Keeping your pet healthy can sometimes be a challenge! Luckily, the shelter offers vaccinations, heartworm, flea and tick prevention, and smaller services such as microchipping and nail trimming.
- Low-Cost Spay and Neuter: To help further control the pet population, the Animal Shelter Society provides spaying and neutering at a low-cost, reduced price.
- Surrender: Unfortunately, sometimes owners will have to face the harsh reality of surrendering their pets. Whatever the reason may be, it’s always best to give your companion to a shelter to be taken care of if no other homes are available. By calling and speaking to the receiving department you can make this process easier. Although there’s no charge, the facility does recommend a donation to help offset the cost.
Adoption Center
While the adoption process is pretty straightforward, the shelter does run a background check as well as require approval from your landlord if you rent a home or apartment. Additionally, the staff will schedule a meet and greet with you, your pet, and your home to make sure the animal will be comfortable and adequately taken care of. Applications can easily be taken care of online for either dogs and cats, and you’ll even be able to look through the profiles of some furry creatures you’ll want to take home! All dogs and cats are spayed, neutered, and have current vaccinations upon adoption.
Of course, when we think of pet owners, we tend to either think of dog or cat people, but there are plenty of animals in need of a cozy home and ear scratches! So if you’re wanting something more unconventional, the shelter also has rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, rats, and other small animals ready and eager to be adopted!
